Ushers
Ministry
In the late 1950s, a small group
of dedicated people saw a need to provide comfort for members
and visitors; to act as ambassadors of kindness and to assist
with general order.
Mr. Sylvester Heyward was the first president. In 1969, under
the leadership of Ms. Rosie Childs, the Ushers Ministry marked
its first decade with an anniversary celebration.March 16,
1969, was the date of the first anniversary with Minister
J.L. Cotton as guest speaker. Since that time the anniversary
has been observed on the 3rd Sunday in March. Several
dedicated leaders have served as president. Mrs. Helen Hicks
has the distinction of having served the longest term as president
and the honor of being the longest serving member is held
by Ms. Rosie Childs. Mrs. Ernestine King is the current president. In
1992, the Ushers Ministry adopted “Meals on Wheels”
as an outreach ministry to provide hot, nourishing meals to
the sick, the elderly and those confined to their homes. Approximately
75 meals are prepared and delivered on the 4th Saturday of
each month.
Presently, there are 51 members serving in the Senior Ushers
Ministry and 32 members in the Junior (Youth) Ushers Ministry. |
